OK here goes another ramble.
One of the ski mountaineering thought leaders has just blogged about his love of a certain type of sock and figured I will go out on a limb and offer another opinion on socks and tell no-one about my love of neoprene socks for ski mountaineering.
I first used neoprene socks in the late ’80’s when I purchased a new (to me) pair of telemark double boots. These were from a run of Merrells (I believe) that had a tendency to break across the pin holes and I purchased them as refurbished by the manufacturer.
At the time the guy selling the boots was raving to me about the neoprene socks he was using for all of his winter activities and sold me on a pair to try in these boots. These were not inexpensive, but they were beautifully made with 5 panelsĀ in 3 mm neoprene. They fit like a glove over an old style pair of polypro liner socks and I have used neoprene socks ever since.
Let me tell you what makes them so great.

1) The provide a consistent even layer over the entire foot. One that compresses very little and does not become a soggy mess. Buy them the right size and they won’t squeeze your feet and make circulation a problem.
2) They are a vapour barrier and your liner boots do not get soaked with sweat. The inner sock (they make much better thin liner socks now) will wick moisture from your skin and it will be contained by neoprene sock. My feet don’t feel wet and clammy and I never have that wrinkled skin thing that you get on your fingers from being in water too long. Maybe I have adjusted to these socks and just don’t sweat much, but I find them very comfortable. I combined these socks with full rand gaiters on those old Merrells tele boots and they never, ever got wet from the inside or out. They were pretty much in pristine condition when I finally moved to plastic in the 2ks. I find this to be a huge advantage when winter camping as I never have to dry out my boots.
Sure they can smell, but if you simply turn them inside out and rinse them off they will fine. When camping wipe them off and dry them inside your jacket along with the liner socks. I bring two pairs of liners on a camping trip and trade off liners as they dry. Because your liner boots did not get wet you can use them inside a pair of shell over-booties as your camp boots. This makes a super-light and comfortable system for cold weather camping.
