Well this is an idea I considered a few years ago when I made the jump to AT from telemark. I don’t really like brakes, but thought if I could get more out of them then it may be OK to carry the extra weight.

Above is just a small sample of the parts I produced as I developed this idea. As you can see the blades of the brake are wider than the ski when retracted (how that all works isn’t bing disclosed at this time), but that these blades are shaped in a way as to make a horizontal shelf as close to the bottom of the boot as possible. The idea is that when skinning there are often times when the snow is icy and an edge under the foot could be of use. This was produced as an experiment to try out this idea.

This picture shows the brake deployed as a ski brake or as a quick crampon (it would be spring loaded, but with a hard stop in the down position so that you could push off). An additional rigid component would be added to the deployed brake to make a robust ski crampon for extended use.
