Boiler/Stove Development

I bought a new camera and want to check the quality of images. So here is another model of the boiler/stove shown here in boiler mode.

This is a working model used to evaluate the system when wood is used as a fuel. Without snow or water in the pot (boiler) to suck out most of the heat, a wood fire can get hot very fast. The next version of the system will use stainless steel for the entire “elbow” component (as opposed to this version with stainless steel and aluminum). A titanium version will be built in the future.

Another update is the new firebox construction method. For many reasons the firebox needs lips on both ends and after exploring other ways (like pexto machines) I decided to try spin forming. The first ring I made was a disaster because I forgot to wax the material. Instant work hardening without lubricant.

These rings have turned out well, but I cannot find a local vendor to supply them.

The firebox also needs a light lid but it has to be indented. This gives stiffness to the thin sheet, and the indent is necessary to allow for the lid handle detail. The lid must allow for a pot but a handle would get in the way. An indented centre allows the outside area to support the pot but provides space for a handle latch (final details to be determined).

So I tried to spin form the lid. I thought it would be easy, but here is what I got.

I was using enough force to stop the disc spinning and it was getting hot, even with all the wax I was using. Later I tried just beating on it with a hammer and why it looks like that. I’m going to reuse the spin form and make a two  part mold and press the disc with a hydraulic press. If that doesn’t do it then I may have to build my dream tool; the drop hammer.

Below is the first version of the ashpan showing how it attaches to the lower pat of the firebox (kind of bayonet mount, but needs to be updated with a locking mechanism to stop it from disengaging when operating the damper). ashpan detail

The damper detail works well and can be trimmed greatly to drop more weight.
