First Shit Post of 2024

Not really anything to disclose in terms of intellectual property, and not a lot of adventure, so I’m talking discourse.

I don’t care to spend much time bitching or dissing but I’m having a hard time with all the Outdoor YouTube Influencers out there. Seeing these “Noob” versus “Expert” videos on different gear makes me wary of the whole thing. And the way some portray themselves in comparison to those they feel are below them would be interesting if it wasn’t so cringe.

It seems to be that Backpackers come in two flavours, normal backpackers and through hikers. So the through hikers look down on the backpackers who look down on the car campers.

There are endless videos on gear comparisons and always the newer better lighter option. But the caveat is that this gear also has to be inexpensive and I mean cheap. There are some out there that do sampling of their audience and conclude that gear should cost this much and why aren’t companies listening and making gear for this price.

I mean the entitlement of these guys. Not long ago companies make great products that you saved up to own and then treated the object with respect and care. Today it’s cheap shit from overseas with no regard to how something could possibly be so cheap.

No one wants to consider the effort and cost to produce something and so these items will be made on the back of someone or something. Either slave wages to those making the item or horrid conditions to the animals that provide the materials (think down feathers, wool and leather) or the toxic mess left from industrial production or the cost to recycle this crap when it

Then there is this idea that everyone needs certain things if they are going to be in the “Expert” group. A guy like Yvon Chouinard would be rolling in his grave if he was dead.

Who the fuck needs a chair? And if I don’t carry the same fire starter kit as the influencer then I’m a Noob. These guys think that being able to make a fire with a variety of methods is necessary, but don’t  factor in differences in location. I’m not planning on a fire when I’m in the alpine. What am I going to burn? And if I’m below tree line, well I know how to use what is available to get a fire going in under 2 minutes (required to pass a course I took). What did we bring with us? A bic lighter. That’s all you need and the understanding of where to get the right material.

Then there are the UltraLight guys that think they’re the first to think “light is right”. Well this has been going on in mountaineering for a very long time, and these hikers would die if they had to carry a rope or two plus all the necessary protection and special tools needed to reach a technical summit. We actually went without tents, sleeping bags, pads and more but we didn’t argue over what chair was lighter of what pad was the warmest for the cheapest price. We sat on our packs, slept on the ropes and bivouacked in snow caves or under a ledge in a bivy sac.

First Shit Talk of 2023

I’m going to lay this out in point form and then come back with more.

Topic 1) The 2022 – 2023 Snowpack

This winter season the snowpack is simply terrible. All kinds of analysis can be done to make comments and predictions, but the truth is that it’s bad and we just have to wait and see what happens this spring.

The melt-freeze is happening in places, but we need a big warming cycle (rain to summits would work) and a huge avalanche cycle for things to improve (avalanche danger wise, that is). We can always get winter snow storms in April in the Canadian Rockies, but it will depend on a lot of variables to actually increase both avalanche conditions and snow quality.

Topic 2) Avalanche Accidents and Deaths

No surprise that there have been a number of avalanche deaths this year when you look at some of the pictures of these events. Lots of bad decisions with accompanying Monday Morning Quarter Backing going on, but it’s pretty obvious what is wrong.

Topic 3) Safety Gear and Why It Shouldn’t Be Called This

As always with these events we are assured by the media that the parties involved knew what they were doing and that they all carried the necessary “safety” equipment.

And as I stated a bunch of time, these devices do not make you safe. Snow shovels, transceivers and snow probes are rescue devices or search equipment and your helmet and airbag are protective gear.

We all need to understand that this gear does not make you safe, in fact using this equipment generally means that you are engaging in dangerous activities. It is up to you to behave in a way that is the safest possible, but if you are in avalanche country then it can never be completely safe.

Topic 4) The Death of the Snow Blogger

Looks like Wildsnow is finally done and with it the end of the independent snow blogger era comes closer to reality.

Who will fill the void? With the deaths of Trevor Sexsmith of Perpetual Ski and Steve Romeo of Teton AT, and the low output of guys like Andrew McLean of Straight Chuter, Reiner Thoni of The Outside Out and Greg Hill there is a hole in the space.

It will be guys like Cody Townsend of the Fifty Project that will fill this void I guess.

Final Shit Post of 2022

I don’t have anything planned for this shit post, but it’s -27 C and I’ve got nothing better to do.

I guess I’m trying to decide what to do with the products I develop. I already disclose a lot of these ideas and basically give it to the world, but the reality is that the world doesn’t give a shit. When ever I think about trying to commercial these concepts I remember that that endeavour will probably involve business and, worse, business people.

When I was directing the MPDP I met a lot of business people and I realized that I did not like them or interacting with them. Not to say I couldn’t hold my own, I could, but that’s because I developed an offensive approach to these interactions. I was pleasant, but because I saw how easily a pat on the back could become a knife in the back I was pretty much ready to take the jugular with the blade I kept close but out of sight (metaphorically speaking).

Anyways, I’m not a business person, I’m a designer and I get the most pleasure from seeing others happily using the products I create. This is why I make half hearted attempts to get these ideas out to the public. It would be great to actually provide solutions to someone’s needs.

I’ve been working on a couple of new products that are not really a qarabu or subobject thing so I have a new brand that I will use to market them. It’s call GXS.

Methods for Mountaineering

preface: I was hoping to make a new page but it seems I forgot how.

This is going to be one long ugly mess before it gets molded into some come of coherent article or whatever you want to call it.

This is going to be about different ways to go about different objectives in the mountains. Once you know your objective you can move on to determine the strategic plan and what tactics to use. The first big division in a ski objective is in the difference between a ski traverse and going for summits with skis.

On a traverse there is never a time when you are not carrying all your gear, whereas in going for a summit one can ditch their big pack and go with a lighter load to the summit and back to camp. One lesson I have learned is to not hump my huge pack as close to my objective as possible. This is a big waste of effort to haul everything in and then haul it all out to have a short summit day. Far better in my opinion is to find a great campsite just close enough to do the summit in a long day with a light pack.

The first time we tried Respendant we made a camp below the Extinguisher Tower as described for the normal route. This only made us haul a lot of gear through some difficult terrain to put us in a position for an easier summit day. We didn’t get our weather window on that trip but we did determine that it would be possible to get the mountain from the Hargreaves Shelter on the shore of Berg Lake. So, the next time we tried we had much lighter packs as we stayed at the shelter, found the firewood for heat and managed to find running water in the creek. We saved a lot of fuel not having to melt snow, it was a luxury to heat the cabin and we made the summit.

This all goes into the strategic plan.

Can we find running water and not have to melt snow? Part of knowing how much fuel you will need.  Melting snow takes time and tastes terrible.

This plant produces fruits which are about the size of a buy cialis no prescription small orange.
Are we going to be travelling on a glacier? Part of determining the team size. I don’t do glaciers with less than three and I don’t go in groups bigger than three, so I know I want a team of three. This will also help determine what gear you need and much more.

Three people need a three person shelter and when I first started winter camping in was with Murray Toft doing a traverse at Rogers Pass. This was in the late 80s and we made snow shelters every night. So part of the plan was to have enough daylight and energy to make a shelter everyday.

Here is where the idea of “cost / benefit” can be useful. Having no tent means having to carry nothing but at the cost of having to build a new shelter every night. On a traverse this is not so good, but for a high camp to go for summits it does have merit. I made snow shelters for a few years until I finally got my hands on a Megamid tent. I had wanted one for years since the first time I saw an ad for the Chouinard Equipment ones, but didn’t get mine until it was made by Black Diamond in the early 90s.

I have used a centre pole tent for many years (I don’t like to call them pyramid tents as that describes the shape but not the structure) and have learned a few things about living in these types of shelters and I realized how good they could be with the right set up. This lead to years of developing the FTR Winter Shelter System.

History of subobject inc

I have recently found some old Floor Lamp frames from the 1990s in storage and have decided to finish them. subobject inc was created to commercialize this lamp when a well know local artist saw it and decided he wanted to give me some money.

The design of the lamp followed from some lighting fixtures (wall sconces) I helped create for an old Calgary night club called Embassy. I was the main designer on the night club and had a hand in most of the layout and many of the fixtures.

The lens are made from a special polycarbonate meant for aircraft and because this material cannot be laser cut (or flame polished; it burns) and I did not have water jet at that time I had to router the shapes. I tried to manually polish the edges but the micro cracks caused by the router meant that eventually the lens would develop many small cracks. At this point I had run out of money and shelved the project.

subobject went on to become a consulting business for many years, but since I hate business I have had it in legal storage for quite some time.

I have finally found some new polycarbonate that I will have water jet cut and a small run of the second series will be for sale in the future.

Shit Talk 2022

The Airbag Issue (or debate, if you prefer) is back at WildSnow and I was unimpressed with the article as well as many of the comments. And now I will bore you with my ass talk.

A physician, Christopher Van Tilburg, is quoted in the article:

“My question was, are we misleading people thinking that they’re bringing the safest equipment when they may not be, for one,” Van Tilburg said. “And for two, avalanche transceivers do a horrible job at saving lives. They’re just not very effective at saving lives. I think people are misled.”

I would answer YES, we are misleading people as it is misleading to think that any of the equipment we bring into the mountains will actual make us safe. This will always be misleading in today’s environment where marketers make the promises.

Once again there is a tendency to want to solve a behavioural problem with a technological fix and I will argue that we should focus on “how we behave” in the mountains more than “what we bring” with us to the mountains. All kinds of reasons are given for why people do not use airbags, but I will not bother to discuss them here. I don’t care.

To let you know where I am coming from I will say that I was instructed in Winter Mountain Travel by certified Canadian Mountain Guides while doing my Undergraduate Degree in a program called Outdoor Pursuits at the University of Calgary. This was in the mid to late 80s and, at this time, there were no commercially available shovels so I made my own collapsible one. Probe poles were just becoming an idea, but we learned how to quickly bash the basket off a ski pole with a ski to then use it as a probe. My first Transceiver was an Ortovox F2, the first dual frequency transceiver on the market as back in those days there were two frequencies in use. Not once in my studies did we talk about these things being “safety’ devices, rather they were rescue tools or body retrieval tools depending on the state of the victim (alive or dead). No one was being mislead, we knew it was dangerous.

As this equipment was required for class, I didn’t question it, but we also always wanted to have gear that was multi-use and have others reasons to bring objects with us. We used our shovels to dig snow pits and snow shelters and our poles to ski with or probe the snow pack for layers and density. It was only the transceiver that was single use, but it was small and relatively light, so we brought them with us and we practiced with them a lot.

Now let’s look at the reasons why an Airbag should also be brought along (one more single-use item) according to the article.

Van Tilburg cites a study that used Dummies with or without an Airbag. The article is vague on many details but the study seems to have be performed in a scenario using the most survivable type of avalanche. As I have stated before “not all avalanches kill, but some will and an airbag will be of no use”. Not much is said about this, but we know a good deal of avalanche deaths are from trauma and not asphyxia.

So, they take a bunch of dummies and get them in avalanches. There are 5 dummies without airbags and 14 dummies with airbags (why 19 total, I don’t know). From the article:

“Of the 5 dummies without airbags, burial depth was a mean of 43 cm, and only 1 of 5 was visible from the surface. In contrast, of 14 dummies with airbags, burial depth was a mean of 15 cm, with all 14 visible from the surface. This study also found that among the 14 airbag dummies, the head was visible for all but 5 and the airway was less than 10 cm below the surface for all but 2.”

OK, this seems to show how great airbags work so let’s take a closer look to ensure we aren’t being mislead. I could ask why use the term “mean” when “average” would work in an article for laypersons, but this is beside the point.

Let’s look at the results. The dummies with No Airbags are buried on average about 43 centimetres deep. This may look bad to an American that doesn’t know metric but this is about 17 inches (or the distance to the floor from just below my knee). Not that deep and one Airbagless dummy was visible from the surface (20% of the total here) and 17 inches being the average burial depth this means at least 2 dummies were buried less than 17 inches deep.

I guess that if the scenario is to buy an Airbag and then do nothing when I get into an avalanche (just doing what the dummy would do) then maybe an Airbag would be a good option.

On the other hand is how I was instructed to act in the event of being taken in an avalanche:

First, be dam sure the slope you are skiing is either stable enough to mitigate the danger of trauma (it will not slide and take you over the cliff, into the trees or deposited in a terrain trap), or the run-out is such that a burial would not be that bad. This is all part of the Risk and Danger equation where probability and consequence are considered.

In my scenario one person is skiing and exposed to avalanche danger while at least one other person is watching from a safe position and is available to search for, and rescue the skier, in the event of a slide. Planned properly a skier caught in an avalanche like the ones in the study above would have pretty good chance of survival especially if they: eject their skis and poles, are wearing a decent size pack that remains in place (mine is a 50 litre stuffed lightly), swim for the surface and have knowledgeable ski partners to rescue them.
The reason is if one sildenafil tab person on your list has a virus on their computer, then the computer picks up the addresses of everyone on the email and blasts the virus out to all of their computers (not a great way to win business!). The advantages of consuming Freeze dried Acai Capsules of the highest possible quality. https://unica-web.com/archive/1999/1999.html levitra 40 mg The main aim of VigRx plus pill is to increase the number of sperm https://unica-web.com/miette_verlinden_passed_away.htm viagra italy that reach the fallopian tubes and subsequently increase the chance of fertilization. It free sildenafil samples not only makes them feel embarrassed, but also disturbs their sexual life.

Now let’s look at the real-life example from the article:

“Even though I’m on a big slope, I’m not feeling the size of the slope because I’m two ski lengths from my friends, standing in the woods,” said Nicholson. “It’s a big slope, but I’m just on the very edge of it. And I do all my measuring, how thick it is, all that kind of stuff. And I went to do a small slope test, so I stepped over the skin track and jumped to see if I got a crack above the skin track. Instead of a crack at my skis, it cracks like 50 feet above me. And releases.”

Again, we are not given all the pertinent details to really understand this situation. I will say that there is a big difference between those that ski for a living and those that ski for sport and that professionals don’t often get to decide what dangers they are expose to, so I’m not talking about what is best for them.

But what I want to know is “what was the danger rating that day?” and “was it known that a propagating layer was present in the snowpack?”

Because the only way to get an avalanche to release above you when you jump on the slope is for a propagating layer to release. So, instead of using this example to talk about what one could learn from this experience it is used as an example of how well Airbags work.

When I was instructed in safe Winter Travel, one of the first things we learned (and was pounded into our heads) was to know when you are in avalanche danger. Either in danger of starting a slide or being hit by one from above during a natural release (and in those days no one was skiing above you, there was no one else around period). This is where the idea of the ‘High Ground and Wide Ground” came from and what we strived for in our travels. To stay “high” was to be on terrain features where the slide paths were below you and “wide” was staying away from danger laterally or by staying well away from avalanche path run-outs. The “wide” ground is a more subtle understanding of terrain, where the difference between safe ground and dangerous ground can be inches. The best way to understand where this ground is, is to observe the edges of an avalanche slide path after an avalanche has occurred. There is often a distinct delineation between the dangerous ground and the safe ground. It is important to know here the line is and respect it.

So, instead of using this story to talk about safe travel and where to stop during periods of instability of the propagation variety, it is used as a sales pitch for Airbags.

The summation, titled “Hurdles” as in the hurdles involved in getting everyone to use an Airbag, establishes the position that it’s a done deal for the use of Airbags and no more discussion is necessary. And while I’ll be looked down upon by those that think their position is right, I will continue to advocate for more appropriate behaviour when it comes to skiing avalanche terrain as opposed to blindly buying and believing in technology to save the day when I screw up.

Finally there is this, from the article:

“Change is hard for people. Right?”, said Van Tilburg. “Change is hard for humans, so to change their dogma for people, to change their dogma from transceiver, shovel, probe to a transceiver, shovel, probe, and an airbag is just pure and simple difficult for humans.”

Yes, it is hard for people to change their behaviour or to stop with the “immediate gratification” our society has embraced and learn how to do an activity safely before heading out into dangerous situations. So instead of changing what we bring into the mountains I think more time and effort should be put on how to behave safely in the mountains. But, as there is no money in this for gear makers I doubt education will pushed as much as technology that promises more than it can ever deliver.

PS

And to the one commenter that said:

“But it’s worth it. Just ask the spouse, parent, or child of anyone who has deployed one and stayed on top.”

I would ask, “what do you say to the spouse, parent, or child of anyone who was wearing an Airbag, but died anyway?”

Shit Talk Continued

What is Ski Mountaineering. The debate is on at one of the Snow Blogs and instead of posting there I bring my bullshit here where no one cares.

Putting “Ski” in front of Mountaineering doesn’t change what mountaineering is. Mountaineering means an attempt to stand on the summit of a mountain. There has been much controversy over “summit claims” since forever, and this helps define the activity. If mountaineering wasn’t about summiting there would be no controversy.

And this is the great thing about Mountaineering; the purity of the pursuit. In Mountaineering there is just one simple Objective: Summiting (maybe two if you include returing in one piece). It is very easy to determine what is a success and why we have others ways to name different activities.

Anyway, if you are going for a summit then you are mountaineering. If you are using skis to attempt a summit then you could say you are ski mountaineering. And here is how you know you are Mountaineering. If you are going for a summit but don’t make it, then you were not successful. No matter how hard it was or how much fun you had or how epic the descent, it was still a failure. The funny thing is that you could make the top and die on the descent and it would still be a successful summit bid. If you don’t make it you were still Mountaineering, but it was just not a success.

There are all kind of other words we use that are often subject of debate. Take Alpine Climbing or Alpinism. To me, this is reserved for the hardest of Mountaineering objectives done in a particular style. We have phrases like Rock Climbing, Ice Climbing and Mixed Climbing to name the activity of making hard ascents that don’t go to the top. We have Backcountry Skiing and Randonnée to name self propelled ski activity that doesn’t go to the top. Mountaineering needs to be reserved for the activity of actually climbing Mountains to their Top. Enough said.

New Topic:

Transceivers. Talk of the new Diract Transceiver by Ortovox made me think of my first Transceiver. It was also an Ortovox, called the F2 because it was the first “Dual Frequency” Transceiver on the market. It used an earphone with audible beeps to guide you to the Victim and I understand that this new one also has Audible Output.

Hope this works, but the one thing I saw in the article (and I admit to not reading in detail) that is most telling is this quote: “logic is that backcountry skiers potentially make riskier decisions thinking all the safety gear will protect them.”
Availability cialis viagra sale is available in all the leading medicine stores and this anti-impotency can also be found in perfume and oils, though searching for these products might be more effective for treating common illnesses as opposed to straight from your resort. One needs to take certain precautions before having generic levitra online as it can result in some side effects such as eye or vision disorders, inflammatory disorder, high or low blood pressure, vomiting, dizziness or headache.

To this I would add: Just thinking of this gear as “Safety Equipment” is wrong. At best this stuff is “Protective Gear” that may change the outcome of an incident or accident (it does nothing to make you “Safe”) and I have always considered a Beacon to be be a Body Retrieval Device: either dead or alive.

New Topic: Glacier Travel

Technology to the rescue again at the big Snow Blog. Talk of Progrees-Capture and a new toy, but no real talk about what it is actually like to pull someone from a crevasse.

So, the shit talk continues: first thing to know is that the number of people on the rope makes a huge difference. Two on a rope on a glacier is bad. One person trying to rescue another is going to be difficult if not impossible. Three is the minimum for safe glacier travel as two people are available to rescue the third. But before a rescue is needed, proper rope management may have saved the day. Keep the rope taught and when someone finds a hole their fall will be arrested before they disappear into the abyss.

If someone actually falls into the crevasse, it is far better for them to climb out on their own while those above anchor the line. Look up crevasse accidents and find the ones where a large group of people on the surface haul someone though the lip of the crevasse and kill them. It has happened.

Anyway, don’t rely on technology to save your ass, have a plan that you know will work.

Edges: When Two are Better Than Four

I could write a thesis on edges and edging as it applies to skiing and skating, and I may do that at some point, but for now I want to talk about this topic as I am disclosing another piece of Intellectual Property in the form of a sled (the sled is still in development and what is show is not a finished model yet).

Sleds have been around for a while so I can’t claim much (and I’m not sure if anyone else has thought of this, as I don’t search out these concepts, I just figure them out and make them up as I go along).

So what makes this sled special? Well, it’s because it does not use a typical type of “runner” that would give a sled four edges. It uses a method of construction that provides the sled with only two edges, and those are the inside edges.

The Sled Has only Inside Edges

The Sled Has only Inside Edges

There are NO Outside Edges

There are NO Outside Edges

The reason for only Inside Edges is that when doing a traverse the sled wants to slide sideways down the fall line and often the Lower Outside Edge will get catch and the sled will flip over. With only Inside Edges the sled will just slide over the Bottom Inside Edge, but Hook the Upper Inside Edge. The sled is more stable and less prone to tip over as the centre of gravity stays below the Upper Inside Edge (the pivot point for rollover).

Safe to Incinerate: Poly Bag Repair

I love these bags and have had them for many years. They come in super handy for many things and I have used and abused mine to the point where they need repair.

I’m using Tuck Tape and will find out how well it does at repairing these bags.

I use three of these bags in my daily winter ski pack. One on the bottom of the pack holds my puffy jacket. The next one on top of that holds my lunch and drinks and the final one holds all my extra gloves, head gear and layers.

I don’t worry about my pack being water proof because I am not afraid of water (snow) getting in, but worry more about trapping water inside the pack. With all my stuff inside plastic bags they are protected from moisture and when I want something out of the bottom of my pack I just take out the poly bags and sit them on the ground in the snow. Just roll the top closed and they do a great job of keeping things dry.

I can then place other gear in the pack that may be wet (like my skins, but I keep them in their wallet to keep them clean) and not worry about my other gear getting wet.

How to Rip-Off the Mountain Tool Holster (MTH)

Ha, let’s see how far I get before I lose interest. First, the fundamentals

1. Get the right pack:

The pack makes a lot of difference in how the MTH is attached. Find a pack where the waist belt can be separated from the padding (it should be outside off the pack), and the compression straps are situated that the webbing is closest to your back and the adjustment buckle is away from you.

Shit Talk 2021

I’ve had the chance to do a brief field test of the FTR (From The Road) Shelter System and I’m now working on addressing some of the issues I’ve discovered. I’m doing research on the web and, of course, I’m getting all kinds of suggestions from the Algorithm. So here are some thoughts on all of this.

When it comes to tents there are not four seasons there are two.

The idea that there are four seasons that a tent must accommodate makes no real sense to me. I see two seasons that I need to adapt to: the Bear and Bug Season where I don’t cook in my tent and where precipitation is most likely in the form of rain. In this season I want protection from the bugs and maybe the sun. I camp in the classic triangle where I maintain at least three places a hundred or more metres apart: a place to sleep, a place to cook and a place to store my food. I will also have a separate place to take a shit and get my water.

The other season is the Snow Season. In this season I cook in my tent as the bears are all asleep and the bugs are dead. In this season I don’t camp in the triangle, I just use a main site where I cook, sleep and store my food (ravens are the issue here). Many times I will be also melting snow, so water needs are different. In this season it makes sense to keep everyone together to make camp life easier. With a uniform surface of snow, making a huge tent platform to accommodate three people is easy, while in the Non-Snow season it seems hard to find a flat spot big enough for a single person, never mind finding a spot big enough for three.

In the Bug/Bear season I find it is easier for everyone to manage their own camp. Single tents weigh almost nothing now and so does a jetboil. It is easier for everyone to find their own space as in the heat of summer it’s nice to get distance, whereas in winter it’s better to huddle up and cook together over one big-ass torch of a stove.

Marmot One Person Summer Tent

Marmot One Person Bear/Bug Season Tent

This Marmot Tent has served me well for the Bear/Bug Season. I don’t always trust these types of tents in the wind, but the upper guy lines really make this tent stable. I also like the position of the door. I can sit up and spin on my ass to get my feet out the door. I can then shift my weight over my feet and stand up in one easy motion. Getting in and out of a tent with the door at the end sucks. Yes it does.

The best thing about the Snow Season is that you can dig down into the snow to make a huge amount of useable space. Being able to stand up inside a tent is important to me. I find the getting into and out of a traditional tent in winter really hurts my back after a while. In the FTR Shelter I can stand up and stretch. I can sit and put my boots on. I can lounge in a lounge chair I mould out of the snow.
Therefore, cialis 5 mg take proper rest so that your body can get enough time for the recovery. Generally, it seems quite embarrassing to men generic levitra no prescription being unable to deal with something bad happens. BackPacks and the difference between Weight, Volume and Mass

I now need a new BackPack to fit all my winter camping and mountaineering gear and enjoy reading about how to winter camp with a 45 litre pack like I see on the interweb.

Everyone wants to ski with the tiny pack, until, that is, they want a giant pack to save them from an avalanche.

I don’t get it. I often read about how a big pack swings all over the place when you ski. Well, first off, learn to ski and learn how to pack a backpack. When skiing the upper body should be “quiet” with not a lot of movement beyond a proper pole plant. With a large volume pack that is packed properly with minimum MASS, skiing is not overly impacted. That is the critical difference. I’m not looking for a low volume, light weight backpack, I’m looking for a high volume, low mass backpack. In winter I want a lot of insulation and insulation takes up a lot of room, however there is not a lot of it so it doesn’t weigh that much. A bigger backpack provides more Inverse Segregation and also makes packing the bag so much easier. I hate spending time trying to cram what I need into a tiny space for no good reason.

So, I’m working on a BackPack that is about 50 litres and I hope to create an addition that can add another 30 to 40 litres. This addition would come off for day trips and summit attempts. Stayed tuned (right!) for more.

Latest News

I’m always surprised to get back on this website with the old Mac I use. Anyway I finally got a chance to field test the tent. I used to refer to it as the “VRS” Tent. This is short for VIRUS. I think of the tent as a kind of Glacier Virus that could attack and kill the Alpine in the wrong scenario and this is why I keep working at the idea of qarabu. Give something back.

I’m calling the Tent System “FTR”, short for From The Road, as this is the foundation for its conception and development. It’s designed to summit objectives from the road, without having anything more than a car to leave at the trailhead (or two in a traverse).

Here is a picture from a field test. Learned a lot about a few things (like siphoning boiling water is pretty much against the laws of physics). Back to the drawing board on some issues, but it’s always interesting looking for new ways to optimize operations.

Not much happening in the mountains for me for a few reasons that don’t matter.

I have been using this time to develop my skills and learn some new programs and digital machines. So I’ve had the opportunity to revisit the MTH and here are the results of that. I really need to just make my own pack with the system incorporated into the design.
